One Family’s Passion for Music Steeped in Military Tradition
“I’m really excited to be walking for Perley Health at this year’s Ottawa Race Weekend,” says Tracy Holmes, Annual Giving Officer at the Perley Health Foundation. “My family has a history of military service, and I will be walking in honour of my Mom and Dad.”
I’m not sure if you’ve ever had to make the gut-wrenching decision of placing someone you love in long-term care, but I can tell you from firsthand experience that it’s a difficult time in life marked by resistance, worry, guilt, and sleepless nights.
Under the Cowboy Hat: A Story of Love and Legacy
John Masson was a quiet and reserved man with a love for westerns and a penchant for cowboy hats. Born on May 12, 1930 in Ottawa, he lived a life marked by love, family, and duty. John's granddaughter, Danielle McCarthy, is participating in the Ottawa Race Weekend as a Team Perley Health member looking to ensure other Seniors and Veterans get the same care that her Pépère received while living at Perley Health.
A Journey of Service: From Military Nursing to Supporting Perley Health
Perley Health Team member, Karen Reed, is participating in the Ottawa Race Weekend for her 4th year in a row! Born into an Army family, Karen's upbringing instilled a deep appreciation for the care of Veterans. After training as a Registered Nurse in Kingston, Ontario, she worked at Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital before joining the Canadian Armed Forces. Her postings took her across Canada, from CFB Edmonton to CFS Gypsumville in Manitoba, where she gained invaluable nursing experience.
Join Us in Doing the Right Thing
The philosophy of doing the right thing has been the guiding principle of my career as a nurse. From nursing school to now, as Perley Health’s Director of Nursing, I know that ensuring older adults live life to the fullest is the right thing to do.
Heather MacLeod is fired up about her new job as the Centre of Excellence's (CoE) Knowledge Translation Specialist. “In this role, I’ll be able to apply everything I’ve learned—and continue to learn—about improving quality of life for Seniors and Veterans living with frailty,” she says.
The late Beryl Montgomery (née McCallum) capped off a life of kindness with a generous gift in her will to Perley Health Foundation. To those closest to Beryl, this final act of kindness came as no surprise; many Canadians of her generation dedicated their lives to community, country and family.
Thank You for Your Trust and Support
Thanks to the generosity of donors, our Answering the Call Campaign has succeeded in raising more than $10 million to advance innovation and excellence in the care of Seniors and Veterans living with frailty. Because of strong support, older adults across Canada will be able to live life to the fullest throughout the aging process. I am incredibly grateful for donors—like you—who believe in our mission.
