When Larry suffered a life-altering stroke, he lost the ability to care for himself and needed help with nearly every aspect of daily living. It was a devastating change for both Larry and his wife, Clay.

"When Larry first came to Perley Health, he was very angry and frustrated,” recalls Andrea, a staff artist who works with residents in the Creative Arts Studio, “but with a lot of hard work and encouragement, we were able to get him using his nondominant hand. His progress has been truly incredible, and he is now able to use dining utensils and brush his own teeth again.”

Larry’s stroke changed his world overnight, but he and Clay are extremely grateful for the excellent care he receives at the Perley. Clay, who volunteers five days a week, cherishes the opportunity to stay close to him. Now, Larry finds joy and connection through art.

“It’s remarkable to see what creative arts have done for Larry physically, mentally, and emotionally,” says Andrea. “He is so much happier now, and is drawing and painting beautifully.”
